The Operations Research Society of China is a national member of IFORS since 1982. It now has registered members of 2000 plus and 16 special interest groups that include newly established groups on healthcare, industrial applications, and behavioral OR in recent three years. ORSC will convene its national congress (ORSC2020) in October in Hebei to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
The following are some selected ORSC major activities during 2019:
The 12th ORSC National Conference on Optimization (ORSC-OPTIMIZATION2019) received over 900 participants
The biennial national congress on optimization was held in Nanjing in April 19-22, which received over 900 participants from all over mainland China, HKSAR, and USA. Among the invited plenary speakers included Prof. Hans D. Mittelmann from Arizona State University, Dr, He Xiuaodong JD AI Institute deputy director, Prof. Zhou Xuesong from Beijing Transportation Institute, Prof. He Simai from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Prof. Fan Jinyan of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Prof. Zhang Zhao from Zhejiang Normal University.
Before the 3-day program also included a one-day tutorial on Optimization in Machine Learning and Optimal Mechanics Design.
International Symposium on Frontiers of Operations Research was held in Beijing on June 2019
This symposium was co-organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing University of Technology, and the ORSC Optimization Group. 130 faculty members and graduate students from China, US, Canada, UK, Australia, and Chinese HK attended the activity. 14 invited speakers presented their research work on combinatorics optimization, variational inequality, continuous optimization, and game theory.
ORSC Conference on Financial Engineering and Financial Risk Management
The conference was held on August 29-30 in Shanghai with 160 participants from 70 universities. 82 papers were presented covering robust portfolios, behavioral finance, empirical analysis of banks and other financial intermediaries, portfolio models, financial derivatives, optimization problems and methods, dynamic risk management, liquidity and system risk, computational financial methods and their applications , Data analysis and supply chain finance, risk management methods, financial measurement, fintech and risk management, financial simulation and so on. During the conference, Prof. Hu Qiying, Shanghai Fudan University was elected as the chair of the ORSC Financial Engineering Group (sub-society) from 2020-2023.
ORSC Behavioral OR Conference in Beijing
During Dec 14-15, the ORSC Behavioral OR sub-society held their fourth annual meeting in Beijing, with more than 400 scholars form China, US, and UK attended. As invited speakers, Professor Saif Benjaafar of the University of Minnesota, Professor George Cai of Santa Clara University, Professor Matthew Shum of the California Institute of Technology, Professor Karen Yanchong Zheng of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and other outstanding scholars in management focused on behavioral organization and behavioral economics. Keynote reports on academic frontiers in the fields of science, behavioral marketing and behavioral operations management
The 3rd ORSC Youth Forum on Important OR Problems in Logistics
This thematic forum was organized by the ORSC Youth charter during October 25-27 in Nanjing. About 60 young OR researchers attended and presented.
The forum involves many hot topics in the field of logistics technology and operations research, such as data-driven dynamic traffic flow in logistics, the impact of taxation and transfer pricing on the strategic decisions of multinational companies, and subway energy conservation. The forum had posters and discussion sessions. The young scholars at the forum carried out extensive exchanges and discussions on the theme of “New Trends in Optimization Modeling in Logistics and Operations”, which received heated discussions among the young OR scholars.
Publications
Currently, ORSC have three journals in Chinese: OR transaction (4 issues/year) and OR/MS (monthly) receiving papers written in Chinese, and a new Journal of ORSC published with Springer (quarterly, EI) http://www.springer.com/mathematics/applications/journal/40305 This new English journal aims to a world-standard journal in OR related theories and solutions. The ORSC calls for excellent original papers from authors in world OR communities.
Editorials of the ORSC journals had several workshops to outreach the publications and seek comments from authors and readers. The workshops were held in Ningxia (June) and Xinjiang (October) in 2019.
Planned activities in 2020 and 2021
ORSC will convene its national congress (ORSC2020) in October 2020 in Hebei to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
International Symposium on Mathematical Programming (ISMP2021) will be held in Beijing in August. This triennial international conference is an important event in the field of optimization. It is expected to attract over 2000 participants from around the world.
ORSC has also scheduled a joint GOR-ORSC workshop in Shanghai in 2021. The OR society of Germany will bring over 30 OR scholars to visit China and hold discussions on cooperation.
